It is “El Alto Oriente Cubano”, a tourist region that is identified, among other values, by the international song La Guantanamera, by Cuban composer Joseíto Fernández. It has its large stock market bay, where the illegal United States Naval Base is located and another very prominent one near where the first Villa de Cuba was founded: Baracoa; zone very identified by the natural endemism and its historical and cultural richness.
In the territory there are three Patrimonies of Humanity: the Alejandro de Humboldt National Park, the nucleus of the “Biosfera Cuchillas del Toa” Reserve; the French Tumba and the French Coffee Plantations.
Guantanamo, the provincial capital means: “land between rivers”, was founded in 1797, and its height is reached by the influence of French emigrants from Haiti. The Piedras Zoo, the only one of its kind in the world, and the Cuban semi-desert path, which leads to the La Farola Viaduct, today a national heritage and via which it is climbed to the First City of Cuba, is also located on its premises: Our Lady of the Assumption of Baracoa, founded in 1511. Also known as the City Landscape, for its exuberant vegetation, the virgin forests of great biodiversity, the polymita, the most beautiful mollusk in the world and other species of high endemism.
Its authenticity is achieved with its typical products based on cocoa and coconut, its legendary rivers and the preservation of its traditions and indigenous dances, among which stands out the Nengón and the Kiribá.
The land where the authentic endures, stands out for its cultural diversity, gestated by the most diverse manifestations a hospitable people in events such as the Fiesta a la Guantanamera, Fiesta de las Aguas and Changüí Festival.
